The European Society of Aerospace Medicine (ESAM) Academy Basic Aeromedical Examiners (AME) Course

We offer a basic aeromedical examiner course, which fulfills the educational requirements to become a Class 2 (private pilot) Aeromedical Examiner (AME). The curriculum includes 48 hours of online lectures plus 15 hours of practical training in Cologne, hosted by the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
Online Lectures (48 hours)
The online theoretical lectures will occur on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday according to the following schedule (CEST):
- 19.08 - 16:00-19:00
- 21.08 - 16:00-19:00
- 26.08 - 16:00-19:00
- 28.08 - 16:00-19:00
- 29.08 - 09:00-16:00 (1 hour lunch break)
- 02.09 - 16:00-19:00
- 04.09 - 16:00-19:00
- 05.09 - 09:00-16:00 (1 hour lunch break)
- 09.09 - 16:00-19:00
- 11.09 - 16:00-19:00
- 12.09 - 09:00-16:00 (1 hour lunch break)
- 16.09 - 16:00-19:00
- 18.09 - 16.00-19.00
Online lectures are not recorded and active participation with a stable internet connection and a camera is mandatory to receive a course certificate.
Practical Training (15 hours)
The practical training (participation is mandatory) will occur at DLR Cologne according to the following schedule:
- 21.09 - 8:00-17:00
- 22.09 - 8:00-17:00
The practical training will include class 2 examination training, hypoxia experience, a facility tour, and a written examination. A group reservation has been made at a local hotel. However, participants are responsible for organizing and funding their own travel and accommodation costs related to the practical training in Cologne.
Recognition
The course is designed to meet the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) requirements, as stated in the Implementing Regulation EU 2019/27 (including the requirements in the Acceptable Means of Compliance and Guidance Material to Part MED, issue 2, 2019), with approval and recognition from the Chief Medical Officer of the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which as per Article 11.1 of EASA Basic Regulations, provides for mutual recognition of AME certification between EASA Member States.

- Completed medical degree
- Completed specialization training
- Interest in aviation medicine
- Sufficient English language skills to participate in this course
Costs
The course fee is €2150 payable to ESAM Academy. The course fee covers:
- Course material
- Facility access for the practical
- Instructors and staff
- Welcome reception for the practical
- Scholarships
- Administrative costs (e.g., website, bank, etc.)
The course fee does not cover:
- Travel, meals, and accommodations costs for the practical visit
Registration Procedure
- Complete the registration form below.
- Upon registration, your application will be reviewed. After review is completed, admissions decisions will be communicated to applicants. Admission to the course is granted on a first come, first served basis.
- Upon acceptance, a course fee payment invoice will be sent to you. Payment must be received within 2 weeks after acceptance notification to confirm your spot in the course. Failure to submit payment will result in forfeiture of your spot to the next person in line.
